Energy management

The energy transition is progressing rapidly, creating new opportunities for businesses to optimize their energy management. Managing energy consumption and production based on price will become increasingly important in the future. Industrial battery storage combined with a data-driven Energy Management System (EMS) offers you the opportunity to optimize your energy consumption, reduce costs, and generate revenue.

These systems play a crucial role in the energy transition, providing businesses with the flexibility to smartly respond to dynamic energy markets. Below is an overview of the primary applications and benefits of an industrial battery system with smart control:

Local optimisation

Self-Consumption

Self-consumption: Store surplus solar or wind energy for later use. This boosts self-consumption, reduces dependency on the grid, and maximizes the return on your investment.

Example: During the day, store excess solar energy, which you can then use in the evening instead of purchasing expensive electricity from the grid.

Peak Shaving

Flatten the peaks from the grid, reducing the risk of being charged the capacity tariff and minimising maximum power demand. Additionally, you can make full use of your grid connection via a battery as an alternative to grid reinforcement.

Example: When there are fluctuating power demands, you can flatten the peaks by discharging your battery, thus saving on peak charges from the grid.

Market optimisation

Day-Ahead Energy Trading

Take advantage of the volatility in the variable energy market. Purchase energy (kWh) during low-price hours to use later, or inject it back during high-price hours.

Example: Based on the published dynamic energy prices (known the day before around 1 PM), you charge the battery early in the morning at low prices to use it later in the day.

Imbalance Energy Trading

Capitalize on the fluctuations of the imbalance market, buying and selling energy (kWh) at highly volatile prices. This application requires a specific contract with your energy supplier (BRP).

Example: In the event of a sudden energy surplus in the grid, the battery charges at strongly negative imbalance prices. Moments later, when there is an energy shortage in the grid, the battery discharges at strongly positive imbalance prices. Between these periods, you can utilise your battery locally.

Grid Services

Provide flexible power (kW) to the FCR reserve market of the high-voltage grid operator Elia to help maintain the grid frequency at 50 Hz and receive compensation in return. This application requires a specific contract with an aggregator (BSP).

Example: 80% of your battery's power is made available to Elia to charge or discharge quickly depending on the 50 Hz grid frequency. The remaining 20% of the power can be used locally.

The benefits of PV Curtailment and EV Load Balancing

PV Curtailment on Day-Ahead

When dynamic energy prices are negative, we shut down or limit the production of your solar panels to consumption level, ensuring local consumption of locally generated energy. This can result in up to 10% additional profit.

PV Curtailment on Imbalance

In case of sudden surpluses in the grid, we shut down or limit the production of your solar panels to consumption level, ensuring local consumption of locally generated energy. The avoided injected power (kW) is settled at strongly negative imbalance prices. This can result in up to 50% additional profit.

EV Load Balancing

Control your charging power based on dynamic energy prices or reduce AC and DC charging stations in case of physical or contractual power limitations.
