The rules surrounding remote monitoring of battery systems are being tightened
Grid operator Fluvius now assesses new applications for batteries more critically. Whereas remote control used to apply mainly to large capacities ≥1000 kVA, we now also see this requirement for batteries from 100 kVA onwards.
What does telecontrol involve?
The grid operator can remotely read power, voltages and currents and, if necessary, intervene through power limitations or even disconnection. For certain cases, Fluvius must also request a capacity assessment from Elia, which in practice sometimes leads to long lead times. We still see quite a few applications from 2025 dragging on, while since the beginning of this year grid studies are once again being issued with telecontrol v5 as a condition.
What does this mean financially?
• Grid study ± €500
• Telecontrol cabinet v5 ± €5750
• If a remote management cabinet is already present, the cost drops to ± €1500
The good news is that the telecontrol cabinet v5 is currently about 50% cheaper than last year.
Technically speaking, this is no minor detail either. When the grid operator imposes a power limitation, the Energy Management System must monitor this as a primary constraint and correctly translate it into the battery’s control logic. Without well-thought-out integration, this can have an impact on efficiency and flexibility. 🧠⚡
